Water has this tendency to seep into even the tiniest of cracks, especially when the weight of a building is pushing down into the ground. This hydrostatic pressure explains why basements are especially vulnerable to water damage. The continued pressure widens cracks and fissures which allows more water to get in and exert even more pressure on the cracks and fissures. The result is extreme structural damage that will require a lot of time and money to fix up.
