Crack Injections

Crack InjectionsConcrete foundations crack; in fact, in modern homes, it is unusual to find no cracks in a basement! When cement cures, it cracks. Home builders understand this and place fortified steel bars (rebar) within the concrete to make sure the concrete stays solid. Also, these cracks do not influence the homeowner. That is until the homeowner wants to turn extra space, such as a basement, into a living space. Finding cracks within the cement, that lets water into this space requires crack injections.

Crack Injection Process

Crack injection is the process by which a resin or grout (epoxy or polyurethane) is injected into a crack or void under high or low pressure. Polyurethane is flexible and is used to stop water leaks. While epoxy is a glue used to bond sections of a wall back together as a structural repair.

In order to fill cracks using crack injections, the cracked area is first exposed and the crack site cleaned up so we can see the crack. Many homeowners attempt to fix the cracks on their own use patching compounds such as hydraulic cement to stop leaks, with limited or temporary success. Hydraulic cement is just as rigid as the cement that already cracked, and the moment the wall flexes, the rigid patch cracks and leaks again. Hydraulic cement also does not always completely fill the crack, and eventually, water may break through again. Polyurethane, on the other hand, can and will hold the crack from breaking.

Raleigh Waterproofing will expose the area and clean the area. Also, we use the appropriate product to permanently seal the crack so that it does not leak period! Then you can turn ‘extra space’ into Living Space!
